Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PPIEP)
We are committed to advancing healthcare through innovative technologies and at the heart of our mission lies the recognition that patients and the public are integral partners in the research, development and implementation process.
For HealthTech companies, integrating Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) is a regulatory expectation and a competitive advantage. Companies that engage meaningfully with patients and the public to shape product and project design develop better, more widely adopted products that meet NHS requirements and the needs of our patients.
By actively fostering collaborations between industry, public, patients, and local communities that shape the design of our research , we ensure HealthTech solutions are practical, inclusive, and aligned with real-world needs. Involving the public from the outset increases the potential for impact and likelihood of successful NHS adoption.
Public partnerships or PPIE mean projects “being carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. It is an active partnership between patients, carers and members of the public with researchers that influences and shapes research.” – National Institute for Health and Care Research
PPIE Strategy
The HRC in Emergency and Acute Care commitments are set out in our PPIE Strategy (2024 – 2029), based on values co-created with over 60 public partners and 35 researchers from across Greater Manchester.
To support activity, we can:
- Offer structured guidance and practical tools for integrating PPIE throughout the technology pipeline, from ideation to implementation – as part of our industry assessment process and in more specialised follow-on support.
- Provide training and development opportunities tailored to the HealthTech sector, equipping companies and public contributors with the knowledge and support to feel confident working in partnership.
- Enhance funding applications by helping embed meaningful PPIE plans that support industry partners’ work and meet the requirements of funding bodies such as NIHR and Innovate UK, improving funding success rates.
- Facilitate partnerships between industry and public partners, linking people to projects where their lived experiences and perspectives can drive mutual benefits.
- Promote evaluation and learning, enabling partners to measure and demonstrate the impact of PPIE practices on project outcomes and real-world impact.

PPIE is delivered in partnership with Vocal, a nationally recognised centre for public and patient involvement and engagement. Vocal connects people with health research, fostering mutual benefit and embedding PPIE within the Greater Manchester research ecosystem.
Our work is guided by national and local frameworks, including the NIHR Strategic Commitments for Public Partnerships 2025-2030, NIHR funding requirements, UK Standards for Patient Involvement and MFT Principles for PPIE in Innovation.
Film: Why PPIE is essential
Rachel Corry, Public Co-Chair on the HRC in Emergency and Acute Care PPIE Advisory Board shares why PPIE is essential for the development of user friendly and effective health solutions and how we will ensure patient perspectives are integrated into the development of new technologies.
